“Bringing music to the heart of our local community”
MUSIC AT ST JOHN'S
Music at St John's Limited (MASJ) is a registered charity dedicated to bringing quality music to the heart of our local community through: offering opportunities for young musicians to perform in public; arranging concerts by established performers;
providing a platform for local schools and musical organisations.
In an area lacking appropriate community venues, MASJ actively encourages the use of St John's Church
(which has wheelchair access) for events.
MASJ also engages with local schools and with Dacorum Music School to educate young people and encourage their knowledge and love of music. Our UniSong events provide school children with a relaxed day of singing, and the UniSound events allow children from local schools to play a variety of instruments, in both cases ending with an informal concert for families and friends.
"We had a really fascinating day singing together …”
"I never realised that making music could be such fun …”
The WOOFYT, a simple functioning organ made of wood, valves, pipes and a pump, has visited us regularly to demonstrate the science behind an organ to children from local schools.
MASJ has created a bursary scheme to offer financial support to young people in their musical journey.
Details are given on the MASJ Bursary Scheme page.

Music at St John’s aims to bring quality music to the local community by offering opportunities for musicians and music groups to perform in public.
Two performance spaces
The Parish of St Johns, Boxmoor offers two lovely venues for holding instrumental, orchestral and choral concerts. For larger events St John’s Church provides the largest suitable venue in Hemel Hempstead. For smaller, more intimate events the Church of St Francis of Assisi in Glenview Road provides a beautiful environment with a good acoustic. (both locations have wheelchair access)
If you are interested in holding a concert at either of these venues please contact Music at St John’s by email to [email protected]. We can help with the arrangements, including publicity beforehand and stewarding on the day.
Music at St John’s sponsored events – lunchtime concerts
You may wish to perform in a concert promoted by Music at St John’s, at St John’s Church. We hold regular Friday lunchtime concerts (two series per year). We do not pay any fees for these, but raise money for the charity. We can pay reasonable travel expenses however and we do offer a free (light) lunch afterwards with those who have attended the concert.
Other events sponsored by Music at St John’s
Alternatively you may wish to hold an event on a Saturday evening at which we could offer to donate at least half of the door takings to the performers.
We would publicise the event as widely as possible to attract an audience. Before doing so we would check that any proposed date does not clash with any other substantial concert elsewhere in the area, e.g. by any of the choral societies. Such a clash would tend to deplete the potential audience.
MASJ would also support the printing of a programme for such an event and there are generally no other costs involved with such evening concerts – the church facilities are available and free to use and any interval refreshments are usually well covered by donations specifically for those.
